Changing the Way Science Works

I am a strong advocate for scientists becoming more actively involved with decision-makers, so we can learn what kind of information and assistance practitioners need, develop relevant and timely products, and communicate effectively with all those involved without undermining our objectivity and the credibility of science.

This is no small challenge, given that scientists and decision-makers have different objectives, work under different professional norms, use different languages, and function in different institutional contexts. And yet, my own and others’ experiences show clearly that it can be done. I use national and international platforms and venues to encourage my colleagues in science and in the policy world to work together more frequently and effectively.
