Work by Location

Alaska

I currently serve on a Task Force of the Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) Science Steering Committee (SSC) and the Arctic System Science (ARCSS) Committee to improve our scientific understanding of Arctic change. White Arctic-wide, the work will be highly relevant to changes underway and occurring in the future in Alaska. Previously, I worked with NOAA’s Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessment (RISA) Program to summarize the proceedings of a workshop, held in Anchorage in 2004. The workshop brought together scientists and stakeholders to assess research needs related to the impacts of climate change in that large state.

For relevant publications, see my CV.

California

My work In California since 1999 has focused on climate change impacts, adaptation and on coastal managers’ preparedness for dealing with those impacts. Increasingly I work with municipalities around the state to assess their vulnerabilities and adaptation options.

Gulf Coast

My work along the Gulf coast has focused on climate change impacts more broadly, and on state and local responses to coastal hazards such as coastal erosion. In addition, I contributed to a report that captured the proceedings of a workshop mainly sponsored by NOAA’s Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessment (RISA) Program, held in 2004. The workshop brought together scientists and stakeholders to assess research needs related to the impacts of climate change in the Gulf Coast Region.

Hawai’i

My research in Hawai’i has focused on how the state has responded to climate change and sea-level rise in the late 1990s. I continue to advise NOAA’s Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessment (RISA) center in the Pacific region (with a home base in Hawai’i) on science-policy interactions, meeting the information needs of decision-makers as they prepared for the impacts of climate change, and on how to effectively engage stakeholders in that process.

Mid- and South-Atlantic Coast

My work along the mid- and southern Atlantic coastlines has focused repeatedly on state and local responses to coastal hazards such as sea-level rise, flooding and coastal erosion.

New England

My work in New England has focused repeatedly on state and local responses to coastal hazards such as sea-level rise, flooding and coastal erosion. I also served on the Synthesis Team of the Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment (NECIA) [link to xxx], oversaw the coastal sector research, and conducted research on adaptation options and barriers in that region.

Washington and Oregon

My work along the northern West coast has focused on coastal erosion and community responses to that problem. More recently I have collaborated with Oregon Seagrant on effectively communicating climate change risks and engaging stakeholders in planning for adaptation.
